The Classic Car Club of Andraitx invites you to join! Their members will be happy to share with you some tips, information and help in keeping that classic of yours in perfect shape. The RALLYS are held 4 times a year and usually consist of a meeting at the CAR BAR in Puerto Andraitx for refreshments, then we all hit the road for a long, winding and FUN drive to some of the less travelled areas of the island of Mallorca.
After a long hot ride, we usually stop for a great meal at one of the many excellent typical Mallorcan restaurants that usually are not visited by typical tourists! We really like out-of-the way places, and food very typical of the Balearic Islands. Enjoy!

A LAMBORGHINI ESPADA GT 400 - 1972:
This beautifully designed supercar by BERITONE was in production with Lamborghini from 1971 to 1982. Only 1,260 cars were ever built, only the Lamborghini COUNTACH sold slightly more models.
This machine has been described as: "The world´s FASTEST FOUR SEATER STREET LEGAL SUPERCAR".
In the 1970´s and early 1980´s, none of the big supercar manufacturers produced a genuine, roomy 4 seater GT Sports Car. The Espada was the only one.
Its long, wide and low - even PARKED it looks like its doing "30 miles an hour".
This Lamborghini Espada GT 400 (GT Stands for "Gran Tourismo" - something akin to "Supercar") has the SAME engine as the LAMBORGHINI COUNTACH.
12 cylinders, SIX double WEBER carburetors ( a real nightmare to tune correctly.), 375 horsepower (European Standard) and 550 hp (American Standard), 10,000 rpm, TWO alternators, TWO voltage regulators, TWO delco ignition Coils, TWO separate brake systems, hydraulic clutch, TWO gasoline TANKS, TWO passenger compartment air intakes using NASA designed aircraft flush air intakes (Also used on the COUNTACH), wide Michelin high speed tyres, (325 kilometers per hour capacity.), all leather interior, two ash trays with each its own cigarette lighter, full air conditioning, adjustable foot rest for the front passenger, very comfortable seats for rear passengers, completel carpeted interior, Bertone Decor Door interior design with wood trim.
The special dash instruments include a 325 km per hour speedometer (190 MILES per hour.), oil Temperature and separate oil Pressure guage, water temperature, electronic revolution counter, accumulative volt-charge meter, 4 exhaust pipes, two radiator overflow tanks, 4 headlights American style, interior door red warning lights that come on when you open a door, warning cars etc. that might be coming, large heavy glass "boot" or trunk cover, along with a flat glass panel for easy rear view vision when backing up. On the COUNTACH the rear vision is terrible...the only way it could be worse is if the driver is blind!
For COOLING THE ENGINE, this machine has two LARGE cooling fans right in front of the wide radiator. One fan is automatic - thermostat controlled, the other is MANUAL, and can be turned on when its a hot day. These fans are so powerful, if you run out of gas, turn BOTH fans on and it will pull you forward like an airplane engine would....er...almost!
This English version of the Lamborghini Espada ( Right hand Drive )car was originally restored by the expert in English motorcars, Mr. Peter Cooper - an excellent mechanic and a professional in bodywork and painting of classic cars. I highly recommend him to any car enthusiasts.
The work I did on the Lamborghini was mostly cosmetic - cleaning, painting, sanding down parts, restoring the engine to its like new glory, adding the second radiator overflow tank, installing new "0" rings on the Ventrui tubes on the Weber carburetors, leather restoration, varnishing wood parts especially the large spare tyre wooden cover in the "boot" or trunk.
5 new tyres (Michelin), rims restored and painted (The original Lamborghini Espadas all had painted rims.), some re-wiring was needed, eliminated the anti-static capacitors and circuits on both ignition coils....you can´t listen to music or the radio anyway in this car...the ENGINE makes too much noise!

The rear windows in the back passenger section open out like "birds wings"..as these windows are like "curved triangles", but the ventilation is excellent.
The chrome gear shift is really comfortable to handle...its in an "armchair shift" position, with a very solid feel - it takes getting used to though, and in this car you don´t want to be "grinding gears" into spaghetti...it hurts the car AND your WALLET!
The ONLY downside of this incredible car is that the STEERING is MANUAL - no power steering - too dangerous at the speeds this car goes, although the NEW Lamborghinis and Ferraris have a good, safe power steering system that did not exist in the 1970´s.
So...with no power steering, its a real "PIG" to park! The good news is that with the stiff, hard clutch and the manual steering, your LEFT LEG and both ARMS get a good muscle building workout. You begin to look like "half" an Arnold Schwartzenegger after a few months of driving this contraption! (Don´t you just HATE this Canadian sense of Humor!?)
I have been able to obtain both the FACTORY WORKSHOP MANUAL ( I have TWO, one in the Car boot, the other in the garage.), and the COMPLETE PARTS MANUAL for this car, so servicing is not a problem and both books came in very handy when doing the restoration.
During the CLASSIC CAR EXPOSITION at COSTA DEN BLANES during their long weekend of FIESTAS in AUGUST 2009, this car won the FIRST PRIZE trophy.
It was indeed an honour and a genuine pleasure to have been a participant in that event. I would like to thank all of those who were there, especially Don Jesus Garcia and Doña Teresa Martorell who made this and last years similar event a resounding success.

When I arrived in Mallorca, I owned this magnificent example of the Espada line - a 1971 Lamborghini Espada GT 400.
The 1971 LAMBORGHINI ESPADA, bought in TOURIN ITALY thanks to a Turkish friend called Kutay in Naples who found the car for me.
There is the usual 12 cylinder engine, 320km per hour capacity, 5 gears, SIX double WEBER carburetors, tan leather seats, electric windows, thick polished wooden steering wheel, 5 speeds, a VERY LOW CAR, see the fotos below. In FIRST GEAR I could drive it up to 98 kilometers per hour. 10,000 RPM maximum for the engine, similar to Ferrari.
I brought the car to MALLORCA in 1974 and was not able to KEEP it here as I had to get Spanish plates on the car, 1.2 million pesetas was needed and it was just not possible at that time. After having it in PAGUERA MALLORCA for almost a year, I drove it to ENGLAND and sold it at a car auction in 1975 to a gentleman from MAIDSTONE KENT who was into HORSES.
The Espada is a tremendously POWERFUL car, NOTHING could compete with it on the freeway except the odd LARGE Ferrari or the COUNTACH. The CLUTCH would wear out quickly, about once every 5 months. There was also problems with the ignition, in Mallorca, to get it to start I had to bring in a GERMAN MECHANIC from Frankfurt! But, despite its faults, its still a fantastic car...
VERY low slung and aerodynamic. The car just barely comes up to my belt!
Parked in SUNNY PAGUERA in MAY of 1974. The Frankfurter Bar accross the street and the beach down the road! I was working at the Mississippi disco at the time!

A ROLLS ROYCE CLASSIC: SILVER SHADOW MARK II 1980:
Rolls Royce Silver Shadow Mark II 1980 - Built in January of that year, this is the LAST Rolls Royce of this model style to be built. Right afterwards, in March of 1981 a newer more rounded body style with major changes (no double headlamps for example) came out. This is the last of the truly classic Rolls Royce style that became its familiar trademark for decades.
It has been FOUR YEARS in the restoration mode.Now finished! The bodywork, paintwork and engine, as well as the lights, dashboard instruments and lights have all been restored. The leather interior has been restored to pristine condition by a specialist in Palma - TAPICERIAS EL FARO.
During the year 2009, the car did NOT pass the MOT or "ITV" inspection because it was producing far too much C02.
I had no choice but to remove completely the two SU carburetors, changed all the wiring system for the ignition, new spark plugs and once the carburetors were off, Mr. Peter Cooper adjusted the floats inside - they were out of sync - and we discovered a spark plug that was a "dud", not firing.
I took advantage of this tuning to clean and paint the engine - in this way, if there ever is a leak of something somewhere, you will see it right away and be able to prevent any faults before they become serious...its not just for "decoration"!
When I took the car back for a test, it passed with flying colours.
This car features all the standard options expected of a Rolls - from double Lucas fog lights front and rear, to climate control, tan leather interior, fully automatic controls, cruise control, ice warning system, triple engine warning system, oil level inspection level when driving, thick sheepskin carpets front and rear, illuminated vanity mirrors front and rear, 4 way sound system with separate Pioneer cassette deck, electric front seats adjustable to almost any position for comfort or relax. Hand made and polished mahogony wood trim on dash and all doors, illuminated leather covered fuse compartment accesible from the inside of the car, chrome emergency tools, twin headlight washers with camel hair brushes, many more extras...simply the best quality in motoring.
This model has been restored to pristine condition by an English specialist in restoring classic cars, Mr. Peter Cooper - one of his last masterpeices was a Rolls Royce Corniche.
In 2008 This car won FIRST PRIZE in the Costa Den Blanes CLASSIC CAR RALLY EXPOSITION - a terrific honor and tribute especially to Mr. PETER COOPER who was instrumental in doing all the body and paintwork, as well as supurb mechanical improvements.

The 24 carat gold plated trimmings - star, trunk handle, trunk star and "560 sel" badge were obtained from a specialist shop in the United States that makes ONLY special accessories for MErcedes Benz - things you CANNOT get in Europe!
I have used the car twice already this year for Palma city weddings, one being a media event at the Palma Cathedral and the historic 5 star Hotel Son Vida.

A LOW SLUNG MERCEDES 300 AMG Custom SE:
The AMG package is exclusive to Mercedes Benz although it is not made BY Mercedes.
The AMG custom fit includes special extra low suspension, AMG leather steering wheel with 4 switches on the wheel, grey leather interior, wood panelling front and back, fully automatic, cruise control, electrically heated front seats, SEPARATE climate control for passenger and driver(!).
There is a JBL sound system with 500 watt booster amplifier in the trunk, 10CD changer in the trunk plus cassette and radio unit by Kenwood (not seen in these pictures), closed circuit air filter system, 240km/hour speedometer, outdoor temperature guage and ice warning system, mahogony polished wooden storage box in between front seats (not seen in these pictures), ABS brake system, outside temp. and ice warning system, fog lamps front and rear, central locking, remote control alarm system. 6 cylender fuel injected computer controlled engine, aluminum wheel rims, high performance low profile Michelin tires, double suspension system. Many more extras. A very smooth and sporty car to drive.
At this moment in time, August 2009, we are doing a much needed VALVE JOB. The engine has over 365,000 kilometers on it and naturally some maintenance has to be done. One of the "bridges" has broken and a new valve cam needs to be installed. All in the game of restoring classic cars....unfortunately!

A CLASSIC SEDAN - The 450 SE Mercedes Benz - Restored by Peter Cooper:
This powerful 8 cylinder standard Mercedes features all the extras of a 1974 classic.
It is in pristine condition. It has been outfitted with new CHROME WHEELS imported from MUNCIE INDIANA available ONLY in the USA - I obtained the address and the order all via the INTERNET, chrome door sills, chrome wheel well covers, triple bumpers seen only in America, new carpeting including the trunk.
The engine compartment overhauled and even painted, polished burlwood gear shift kmob, power brakes, power steering, electric Sun roof, foot activated windshield washer and emergency brakes, 4 speed standard, disc brakes on all 4 wheels, variable heating options, 6 CD changer in the trunk plus a Kenwood cassette and radio - 4 way sound system with remote control. Emergency siren plus an Anti theft alarm system with ignition lock - even if the keys were stolen the car would not start! Electric windows, emergency siren, fog lights front and rear, 2 rear extra brake lights mounted on the rear shelf, totally reclining bucket seats in the front, electric radio antenna override switch, magnificent smooth handling.
The car was presented for the first time at a car Rally...here it is (above) at the Costa Den Blanes Car Rally, August 2009. The children present, both car fans, Alex from Illetas and Daniel GP.
The built in trailer hitch with regulation wiring put in at the factory allows us to enjoy a bit of boating by the beach.
This boat, motor, and trailer unfortunately, was completely destroyed by vandalism in a garage fire in the summer of 2001.

FUN ON TWO WHEELS - A 1980´s CLASSIC BMW R-100RS:
Fully restored to the last detail in 1999:
This bike features the roomy BMW side cases, double disc brakes on the front, discs on the back, fully equipped speed fairings - new windshield with copper bolts, new instrument panel and clock, dual exhausts, 5 speed smooth transmission, emergency engine cut-off, adjustable steering tension, adjustable suspension, secret storage compartment.
There is a theft - proof battery, steering lock incorporated, separate
day and night illumination switch, twin cylinder "boxer" air cooled 998cc
engine. Excellent cornering and acceleration even with the saddle bags
full loaded and a passenger on the back. A very strong, sturdy bike build
to last a lifetime. Only drawback is that it is HEAVY to move if you have
to back out.

For those who enjoy "Driving Briskly" - A PORSCHE 911 S 1971 CLASSIC:
The ORIGINAL owner of this car was the FATHER of JULIO IGLESIAS! He then sold it to one
of the most illustrious families of MALLORCA, Don Francisco Vidal, builder, promoter and co-owner
of the large company called "INMOVISA"! Fully restored engine - from the crank case to new cylinder heads
and pistons, clutch and valves were done in 1994 by the master mechanic
and specialist in Classic Cars and Motorcylces Don Federico:
This car was originally owned by the FATHER of JULIO IGLESIAS, and for this reason I have kept the original MADRID license plates. It has the BOSCH fuel injection system, turbo cooling, leather seats and dash, genuine formula 1 racing leather steering wheel, rear wiper, halogen driving lights, fog lamps(yellow).
There are massive air cooled disc brakes all around, 2+2 configuration with 2 small leather rear seats that fold down for carrying extra shopping purchases. Manually controlled cold starter and throttle, full set of instruments including both oil temperature and oil pressure and oil level guages - NOT idiot lights!
Five speed racing shift, very harsh sport suspension, manual steering and brakes, (no power assisted anything is put on a real racing car - it would be dangerous!). 260km/h speedometer, plush carpeting inside and inside the front hood storage area, 2 batteries, 3 way music system and cassette, electric sun roof, new door storage compartments with chrome trim on both doors (purchased 1999), Engine compartment has been overhauled and painted (1999).
5 new Michelin high performance tubeless tires, fighter aircraft-style
locking system on the seat belts, automatic engine ignition cut-off if
revolutions exceed 8,000 rpm. , secret storage compartment.

nozzle, speeds up to 120 km per hour on the water! 2 Cylinder WANKEL ROTARY engine, smooth, fast response and very
easy to service and maintain! Indicators for fuel level, speed, jet nozzle position, RPM, digital start with safety key.
Fully licenced, insured and Palma registered. Trailer includes obligatory spare tire and European standard rear lights. This
"water rocket" can be enjoyed here from April to October in Mallorca on the water! You now need now a special Jet Ski boat licence
and safety course certificate in order to drive one!

SEAT 600 - TO RESTORE!
In 1977 when I had to sell a Lamborghini Espada that I brought to Mallorca, I bought a very useful and
practical vehicle that served me well for many years....The car is from 1969, I bought it
second hand in 1977 and drove it till 1986 when I finally retired the car in my garage waiting to be restored one day.
Its not for sale! During that time, I had new plush seat
covers put in, special interior lights, engine tuning, and the drive shaft made so it would not break
when going up a steep hill! Great fun with this little car, good memories. Only problem is that the
radiator is at the back, facing sideways, and many many times the engine overheated!
Someday soon I hope to restore it to its old glory!

CLASSIC CAR COLLECTION - GARAGES!
Although I am not a mechanic, for many years I have had to maintain cars from Jaguars to Lamborghinis that
I had in the past. Over the many years of living in Mallorca, I have managed to build up an excellent place
to maintain, store and keep in good condition these special cars. Its very important to have a very complete
and comprehensive set of tools and accesories to carry out any work. Nothing worse than trying to fix something
without the right tool for the job. Some tools I brought with me from Canada and Germany that cannot be found in
Spain.

CARS and MOTORCYCLES OF THE PAST!
My FIRST mode of transport was a YAMAHA 80 CC motorcycle, in black. This is the only photo I
have of that fun bike. It was 1966 at the time, just graduated from High School. This bike represented
a whole new freedom, an unique experience we all share with our first "set of wheels"! Great memories!
Shortly thereafter, in 1967 I traded that bike in for this Yamaha 250cc:
MY FIRST CAR! Winnipeg Manitoba Canada, while in the Royal Canadian Air Force flying Dakotas C-47 planes,
I bought this 1953 Chevrolet Coupe. The only thing NEW it had was a new BATTERY! Drove it twice from Winnipeg
Manitoba to Barrie Ontario in 1967/68. Ran into snowbanks, blizzards, the car was stolen from me once while
I was at a Jefferson Airplane rock concert in Winnipeg, and yet it never let me down! Great first car!
MY SECOND CAR! BARRIE ONTARIO, 1969, Pontiac Parisienne Custom Sport, second hand, year 1964, cost me
$1,728.50 Canadian Dollars, it was in first class condition with white "sky"
leather upholstry, bucket seats, a 327 cubic inch 8 cyl. engine. It was LONG and wide. Very comfortable to drive,
safe in the winter as it was solid on snow. I had it decorated with "flower power" stickers, the rage of that time,
as well as a Chrome "foot" on the gas pedal you could buy at Canadian Tire stores, purple "sex lights" that went on
the top right and left inside the front windshield, and lots of other "newfie" magic junk! It was a great car!
MY THIRD CAR! A 1967 JAGUAR XKE 2+2 Automatic with red leather seats front and back, chrome wire wheels, 4.2 litre
6 cylinder engine, new paint job and tires. I had it fitted out with 2 CB Radio communications radios, 2 cassette decks,
BOSE speakers, TV set (wild for its day!), 2 batteries with crossover switch from inside the car (No need to go out in
the cold weather to open the hood and change batteries!), 18 circuit alarm system, transistorized ignition (another advance
ahead of its day), special starting sequence that made it impossible to steal the car, even if you had the key! Colour
light show that went with the music, electronic echo device for the music, airspeed indicator from a Dakota C 47, interior
and exterior thermometer guages, a "Don´t Just Sit There....Watch for COPS" plaque on the Glove compartment door, a HEUER
Timer/Watch for Drag Races (Also mounted on the Glove Compartment Door), TV aerial, 2 CB RADIO huge antennas with a Co-Phaser
for the radio transcievers, Custom gear shift knob from Jaguar, chrome door edge trim (prevents bangs to door edges), HEATHKIT
PA loudspeaker for emergencies, hidden under the hood with the microphone in the car near the steering wheel, halogen spot lights
FRONT and a yellow halogen spotlight with FLASH option at the back. Great for backing out into a street and you can´t
see anything! Volt meter and VU meter for the music system, Amp meter for battery control. Huge long rear view mirror that goes
from left to right covering 180 degrees rear viewing! Auxiliary hot air blower to defrost the windshield quickly in winter.
Extra trip meter. Sheepskin and cow skin throw coverings on the seats. Many other extras as well! The car broke a cam shaft,
and was loaded on a truck in Germany ( I was living in Lahr Schwartzwald at the time.) and taken to England for repair. I have
not seen the car since.
I bought it in 1969, drove it twice all accross Canada - Barrie Ontario to Kelowna British Columbia, then an entire perimiter tour
of the coastline and borders of the USA - Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Houston Texas, Dallas Texas, Mexico,
Alabama, NASA Cape Kennedy Florida, Miami, Key West, then back up to Washington DC, New York City, over to Toronto Canada, then
to Montreal and on the ocean liner Alexander Pushkin to Hambourg Germany in 1971. The car NEVER broke down once!

The picture below is of the DASH that looks more like and AIRPLANE COCKPIT than that of a CAR! On the bottom
RIGHT of the picture you can see an actual AIR SPEED INDICATOR from a C-47 DAKOTA Aircraft from the CANADIAN RCAF.
The FIFTH car was a TRIUMPH SPORT COUPE, 1968 model, white with black leather interior. A great little
perky car with chrome air intakes on the carburetors. Unfortunately no photo of this car exists! I sold it
to an Brian Watson in 1975 for 55 Pounds Sterling plus a Seat 600 that broke down totally 6 months later! Ouch!
SIXTH CAR:
After that, I bought the SEAT 600 Blue/Green seen here,
that is now in my garage waiting to be restored! Its not for
sale - too many incredible sentimental memories attached to it....like the front right wheel coming off on the freeway
on the way to Palma, and again on our way to MURCIA on the mainland of Spain!
SEVENTH CAR:
In 1979 I was Director of the Discotheque CHARLOTS in MAGALLUF. The owners, the PICCORNELL family whom I have known and
worked for and with for many years, GAVE me a PONTIAC GTO CONVERTIBLE, 1970´s model, as a PUBLIC RELATIONS CAR as well
as my private transport vehicle! It was a fun car to drive, electric roof, windows, automatic, and really an eye-catcher
in an island where NO SUCH CARS like it existed! It was a problematic car, it could not take the Mallorcan heat, the
FAN did not turn properly, so I had it WELDED to the engine crank shaft pulley so it would go faster than if driven by the
fan belt! It always overheated though! The tyres were balding, and the brake fluid needed constant topping up! There were no
mechanics here who knew how to service it properly, and it was tough getting tyres for it! So I finally SOLD it to a chap from
BILBAO in the BASQUE province of Spain. He drove it back through the length of the mainland with only overheating and brake
fluid problems. Other than that, the car ran well! I used it as my WEDDING CAR when I got married to my first wife MARIA in
MARCH of 1980! This is what it looked like!

EIGHTH CAR:
In 1980 we needed a NEW CAR. We decided upon a new CITROEN VISA SUPER "X", metallic black (according to the sales
receipt), sun roof, special wheels, blue interior, headrests, 4 speed 4 cylinder engine. I did over 480,000 kilometers
with this car and went through THREE new engines! Marga had an accident with it in 1997, some young Spanish chap crashed into
the rear side. The insurance only offered 1,500 Euros for the whole car. It was a write off. Summary: A good car, but lacked
reliability and the engines did not last much beyond 100,00o kilometers! Here it what it looked like:
